Huge whale sighting stuns sailors off Mallorca coast

Fin whale - second largest animal on Earth - spotted just metres from boat in rare encounter

It was a once-in-a-lifetime sighting off the coast of Mallorca this Monday, as a massive fin whale (the second largest animal on Earth) swam gracefully past a group of stunned sailors.

The majestic creature, which can grow up to 24 metres long, was seen just after 11am, calmly gliding through the waters near the island. A short video of the moment was shared online and has since gone viral, sparking admiration from viewers around the world.

The footage shows the sheer size of the whale as it moves effortlessly alongside the boat, leaving both the crew and social media users amazed. Although fin whales are typically found in deep parts of the Atlantic and Mediterranean, they do sometimes pass by our shores during their migratory journeys. Even so, to see one this close to land is extremely rare.

Conservation groups were quick to seize the moment to raise awareness. “Being able to see them so close to the coast is a privilege, but also a wake-up call about the need to keep our seas clean and safe for all species,” one local organisation said.

They reminded the public of the importance of maintaining a respectful distance from marine animals and of protecting their habitat for the future. Events like this, they say, are not only beautiful but also a clear sign of what we stand to lose if we do not act responsibly.
