Four Torrevieja beaches will host San Juan bonfires under heavy security
Authorities are preparing for large crowds on June 23 as residents and visitors gather to welcome summer by the sea

One of the Costa Blanca's most popular summer traditions is set to return this week as Torrevieja prepares to celebrate Noche de San Juan with bonfires, beach parties and thousands of people expected to gather along the coastline.
The celebrations will take place on the evening of Tuesday June 23, with four beaches officially designated for the annual event. La Mata, Playa del Cura, Los Locos and Los Náufragos will all host bonfire celebrations, allowing residents and visitors to take part in the traditional midsummer festivities.
With large crowds expected, Torrevieja City Council has put a major safety plan in place. More than 60 personnel, including Local Police officers, Guardia Civil agents and Civil Protection volunteers, will be deployed throughout the evening to help ensure the event runs smoothly.
Emergency medical services will also be on hand, with four ambulances stationed across the city's beaches and a dedicated first aid point operating at Los Náufragos beach.
To help people celebrate safely, the council will distribute around 30,000kg of pine and mimosa wood for the bonfires. Officials explained that these types of wood have been selected because they burn cleanly and leave very little residue behind.
Anyone planning to attend is being reminded that bringing other types of wood or materials onto the beach for burning is not permitted.
Firewood will be available from several distribution points. At Los Náufragos, supplies will be handed out near the entrance to the western breakwater. At Los Locos beach, collection will take place in the central section of the beach, while Playa del Cura's distribution point will be located at the northern end.
La Mata beach will have several collection areas, including Avenida del Agua, next to the pumping station, Avenida de los Europeos beside the lifeguard post and an area opposite Plaza de Encarnación Puchol in La Mata.
The festivities will begin at 8pm and continue until 2am. After that, beachgoers will be asked to leave so cleaning teams can move in and begin clearing the beaches before the start of the next day.
A special overnight cleaning operation has been organised to restore all four beaches as quickly as possible once the celebrations come to an end.
Beach Councillor Antonio Vidal described the Night of San Juan as one of the most important and well-attended events on Torrevieja's calendar. He also urged those taking part to help keep the beaches clean by gathering their rubbish and leaving it beside the designated waste containers before heading home.
Every year, the Night of San Juan attracts thousands of people to beaches across Spain, where bonfires, music and gatherings with family and friends mark the traditional start of summer.
