WATCH: Spanish town swaps bull run for 300-kilo giant ball
This alternative to controversial bull runs and fights has become even more popular than the original
The small town of Mataelpino, just north of Madrid and home to only 2,000 residents, has once again put its unique spin on a centuries-old tradition. Last weekend, locals celebrated the first ‘boloencierro’ of the August festivities, a thrilling if somewhat unusual event where participants are chased not by bulls but by a giant ball weighing more than 300 kilos.
Around 350 metres of narrow streets became the stage for this curious spectacle as several dozen runners took part, according to municipal sources who confirmed no injuries were reported.
The ball barrels down the street under its own weight, sometimes faster than expected, creating chaotic chases, unpredictable tumbles and plenty of laughter. To keep things safe, racers are now required to wear helmets, just in case the rolling giant catches up to them.
While the traditional running of the bulls has long been part of Spanish culture, this playful alternative is quickly stealing the spotlight. The boloencierro still carries an element of danger but without the controversy of animal harm, and each year it draws more attention from residents, visitors and the media.
The City Council proudly insists that this inventive version is now just as popular, if not more so, than the original.
