Spanish government steps in to consider a second health centre in Orihuela Costa
The government has assured the people that if they get the approval of the regional government, they will pay for the work to be completed themselves
The Department of Health will carry out a technical report to assess the suitability of a proposed site for a second health centre for the people of Orihuela Costa. This news was stated by the Councillor for Heritage, Matías Ruiz.
Furthermore, Ruiz has clarified that there is no legal impediment to the transfer of said plot to the Ministry of Health. He stressed however that the current PP-Vox government team considers it more appropriate to build a new health centre in a more central and accessible location for the residents of Orihuela Costa, than to extend the existing one, as the previous socialist government proposed.
At the beginning of the current legislature, the Councillor for Health, Irene Celdrán, expressed her desire not to undertake the extension proposed by the socialists in a decision protested by the residents of the coast.
Ruiz instead insisted that his government is intending to “install a second health centre, in a place with a better geographical location, better situated with respect to the population of Orihuela Costa.”
The Mayor, Pepe Vegara, has pointed out that the City Council has already sent most of the documentation required by the Department of Health to assess the technical viability of the project. The mayor continued by stating “I am convinced that before spring 2025 the issue will be resolved.”
The current Aguamarina health centre is understaffed and lacks space to handle the number of people who use the service in the summer. Until now, the possibility of a second centre had been rejected by the Generalitat due to the lack of sufficient health cards on the Orihuela coast.
The Town Council therefore has stated that if the Ministry does not undertake the commitment to carry out these works, it will be the Council itself that will pay for them.
Finally, the mayor stated that “If they (the Generalitat) cannot do it, we will do it and we will agree on how that money will return to Orihuela. What I am sure of is that this health centre is necessary and will be built sooner rather than later.”
