What’s redefining where people live in retirement?
Remaining in the same location or moving closer to family. Historically, these have been the two most popular options for retirees choosing where to live. More recently, there has been a shift, with over a million UK pensioners moving abroad and many others viewing retirement as an opportunity for freedom.
These changes are underpinned by wider factors both positive and negative, from better digital connectivity to rising bills pushing up the cost of retirement. But they’re also being driven by a new view of retirement as a flexible, multi-stage transition rather than a fixed stop date. So, what are the trends redefining where people live in retirement?
1. Lifestyle over location
Remaining in areas where roots are established has many benefits, such as the comfort of familiarity and longstanding social connections. However, while it may be convenient, it’s not always conducive to a better quality of life. This is why more retirees are prioritising the lifestyle they want over set locations.
For some, that means moving from a busy city to a coastal town where they can enjoy time on the water. Others swap suburban neighbourhoods for rural communities that provide easier access to countryside trails and a larger gardening space, making outdoor hobbies more accessible. Think seasonally when reviewing options, considering the atmosphere, weather and leisure opportunities in winter as well as summer.
2. Multi-destination living
Rather than settling permanently in a single location, some retirees divide their time between two or more homes. This best-of-both-worlds approach is a popular way to enjoy better weather – a motivator for Brits of all ages – without completely breaking ties with home and the loved ones living there.
This arrangement can help you maintain important relationships while also enjoying new experiences. It may also reduce the feeling that you must choose between family connections and personal aspirations. However, practical considerations such as healthcare access, tax obligations and property maintenance can make multi-destination living challenging and will require careful planning before you commit.
3. Increased travel
Retirees enjoy greater freedom to travel than ever before, and recent reports show that it’s a key focus, especially for early retirees. Motorhome holidays, guided adventure holidays, extended multi-destination tours and immersive slow travel trips are all popular options for those aged between 50 and 80, according to the latest reports. This means that more funds are being invested in travel, at least initially, rather than finding the perfect permanent residence at home.
Many make a permanent transfer to a destination they love, choosing to prioritise time abroad and centre holidays around UK visits. This has driven demand for tailored expat travel insurance providing appropriate cover and English-speaking support for British retirees living outside of the UK. Spain, Portugal and France are all popular destinations because of their picturesque settings, great weather and ease of access by air, rail, car and sea.
4. Desire for community
A growing number of retirees choose locations based on social opportunities rather than property alone, especially those who have lost their partners. Meaningful connections play a major role in long-term wellbeing and improving the overall quality of life.
There’s a choice between official retirement communities, where a programme of activities is available every day and retirees live together in one building, and community-focused villages and towns with active local organisations where pensioners can continue to live independently. There are activities for every interest in most areas, from book clubs and craft classes to walking groups. These clubs are wonderful ways to build new friendships quickly and establish a sense of belonging.
5. A chance for reinvention
Retirement gives you the freedom to redefine your identity beyond your career, something which new retirees are embracing after years of climbing the corporate ladder or looking after the family at home. A new location can support that fresh start by placing you closer to opportunities that match your evolving interests.
The most successful retirement moves reflect a clear understanding of how you want to spend your days, in terms of activities but also atmosphere and pace of life. When your surroundings support what matters most to you, retirement becomes less about slowing down and more about creating a life that feels genuinely rewarding.
