Was this the hottest summer ever in the Region of Murcia?
Aemet breaks down the figures for an exceptionally hot month of August
August 2025 has been confirmed as the third hottest August in at least 65 years in the Region of Murcia, according to the monthly climate report from Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).
The average temperature was 27.3°C, surpassing normal values by 1.6°C, based on the period of reference between 1991 and 2020. Only August 2012 (27.6ºC) and 2023 (27.4ºC) were hotter.
This continues a trend of increasingly warm summers — the last seven Augusts have all been classified by Aemet as warm or very warm.
The hottest day of the year occurred on August 18, when records were broken including historic highs in Murcia city (45.1°C) and San Javier, which saw its highest temperature since 1961.
The heat was especially intense between August 15 and 18, when maximum temperatures exceeded averages by over 8°C.
Even nighttime temperatures remained abnormally high, with Murcia city experiencing 31 “tropical” nights (above 20°C) and San Javier 27, four of which were “torrid” (above 25°C).
Several record-breaking monthly average temperatures were recorded at regional weather stations: Alcantarilla Air Base set a new record of 37.1°C, beating a record from 1942; Cieza matched that with 37.1°C; Murcia city hit 36.9°C, breaking a 1984 record; Torre Pacheco recorded 34.1°C; and Caravaca de la Cruz, 32.9°C.
The lack of rain compounded the heat. Only 3.2 mm of rainfall was recorded, just 25% of the normal, making August very dry. There were just seven days with any precipitation anywhere in the region, when there were storms on 12 days. And lightning activity was also low, with 518 strikes, well below the 2000–2024 average.
One significant weather phenomenon was a dry microburst (a concentrated downblast of cool air) in Yecla on August 18, which caused a sudden 6°C temperature drop during a DANA (isolated high altitude depression, or a cut-off low) event moving across Spain.
Despite August’s dryness, the overall hydrological year (from October 2024 to August 2025) has been very wet, with rainfall 132% above average — the seventh wettest of the 21st century. The agricultural year also shows 123% above normal rainfall, largely thanks to an extremely wet March and July.
As such, while August 2025 brought record-breaking heat and minimal rainfall, the year so far has been characterised by unusual patterns of rainfall and climatic extremes, underlining the growing unpredictability of the weather in the Region of Murcia.
