The National Police have captured one of Italy's most wanted criminals in Orihuela Costa, arresting Simone Bartiromo, a 35-year-old mob boss who led the Sorianello clan within the notorious Camorra crime syndicate.
The arrest took place Wednesday July 16 as Bartiromo was leaving his house and getting into a vehicle parked outside a residential complex in the Orihuela Costa area. The operation ended more than 13 months of international investigation involving Spanish police units from Alicante, Madrid and Malaga, working alongside Italian Carabinieri from Naples.
Bartiromo faces 24 years in prison for four separate drug trafficking offenses and had been living as a fugitive in Spain while allegedly continuing his criminal operations.
As leader of the Sorianello clan, a Camorra group based in Naples' Traiano district and linked to the powerful Secondigliano alliance, he was involved in large-scale cocaine shipments and distribution across Europe.
The Camorra is one of Italy's oldest and most powerful organised crime syndicates, operating primarily in the Naples region of southern Italy. These groups are involved in drug trafficking, extortion, illegal waste disposal and other criminal activities both within Italy and internationally.
Here in Spain, the investigation revealed that Bartiromo had established an extensive network of contacts deployed in Malaga and Barcelona. He operated as a supplier to other criminal organizations across Europe, making him a significant target for international law enforcement.
The breakthrough came through information sharing between Spain's FAST National Network and FAST Italy, which allowed investigators to focus on the Orihuela Costa area where the suspect was believed to be residing.
Italian authorities had issued a European Arrest Warrant for Bartiromo and he now faces extradition to Italy to serve his potential 24-year sentence.
