ARCHIVED - Vice president of Hostetur dies while sailing in La Manga
The 73-year-old was heavily involved in the fight to protect the Mar Menor
The vice president of the hotel business association (Hostetur), José María Cano Vilar, sadly passed away on Saturday April 30 while out sailing in a regatta with his family in La Manga del Mar Menor. The emergency services received a call from the boat when it was around two miles from the coast on the way to the Tomás Maestre Marina, and although his relatives carried out first aid, the 73-year-old passed away from cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead at the scene.
A well known figure in the Region of Murcia, Mr Cano Vilar’s death has resulted in an outpouring of sympathy in the community.
“He was a fighter for the Mar Menor and went out every weekend to sail with his family. So he has passed away where he most liked to be and in the place he fought for. It is a great loss for the business world, because he was one of those who always added to it”, the president of the Chamber of Cartagena, Miguel Martínez, said.
The vice president was very involved in the institutional commissions related to the saltwater lagoon during his lifetime and managed more than a hundred rental properties in La Manga.
