ARCHIVED - Unique phenomenon heralds the arrival of summer solstice in Orihuela
The public is invited to witness the mysterious spectacle at the Vega Baja town's Church of Santiago at 8pm on Tuesday June 21
The arrival of the summer solstice is traditionally marked in a "unique and mysterious"' way in Orihuela and the public is invited to make their way to the Church of Santiago on Tuesday evening, June 21, to witness the "phenomenon" first hand.
As the last ray of spring sunlight falls on the church façade, it will bathe a sculpture of an owl in sunlight... without casting any kind of shadow.
According to Orihuela Town Hall, this "only occurs with this last ray (around 8 pm) and every year brings together dozens of tourists, locals and onlookers eager to witness this phenomenon that occurs only once a year."
The council's Tourism Department has also organised a special tour of the town's façades and monuments which sets off from the Tourist Office at 6.30pm and will make its way along the main streets of the Old Town and Calle Mayor until it reaches the Church of Santiago.
Anybody who wants to see the special illumination for themselves can go along to the church prior to 8pm, or book a place on the tour here.
