The playas de Garrucha, Cuevas and Vera in Almería are all eroding into the sea. Here's how ecologists want to restore them
A new coastal restoration plan aims to protect beaches between Garrucha and the Almanzora river with breakwaters and fresh sand

The beaches along the levante stretch of the Almería coast are slowly slipping away. Year after year, waves and currents are carrying sand out to sea, leaving some of the area’s most popular shores thinner and more vulnerable.
Now, though, there is a plan to fight back.
A project to restore beaches in Garrucha, Cuevas del Almanzora and Vera has received a favourable environmental impact statement from the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge.
The €3.6 million project, which is being promoted by the Directorate-General for the Coast and the Sea, focuses on the coastline between the port of Garrucha and the delta of the Almanzora River.
One of the main measures will be the construction of a 268.5-metre breakwater extending from the northern quay of the Port of Garrucha. It is foreseen that this breakwater, which will plunge down as far as waters around six metres deep, will have the effect of stopping the sand from disappearing into the sea.
At the moment, large amounts of sand are being lost near the port because of underwater contours linked to a submarine canyon just offshore, which effectively funnels sediment away from the beach.
A second, smaller breakwater is planned at El Playazo beach in Vera. Measuring around 40 metres, it is designed to slow the southward drift of sand that contributes to erosion on the beaches further north.
But barriers alone will not rebuild the shoreline. That’s why this ambitious project also includes bringing in around 60,000 cubic metres of sand to reinforce the beach at El Playazo, sourced from a transfer site and a quarry with similar characteristics to the existing sand.
According to the coastal authority, the work will help regenerate the Vera-Natsun beach area while “preventing the loss of sand through the existing underwater channel in front of the port of Garrucha”.
If it works, the plan could help stabilise a stretch of coastline that is increasingly under pressure from natural coastal processes, protecting the beaches that locals and visitors enjoy every year.
