The Glorieta or Calle Corredera, the main tree-lined avenue in Caravaca de la Cruz
The Glorieta, or Calle Corredera, runs from the Templete to the Convento del Carmen in Caravaca
The Glorieta is the name commonly given to Calle Corredera, the wide tree-lined avenue which leads from the Templete to the Plaza de San Juan de la Cruz along the southern side of the old centre of Caravaca de la Cruz. It is now a wide, pedestrianised area.
This street is a popular venue for events and meeting point among the inhabitants of the city, and is also home to some of the buildings which are of most historical interest in Caravaca. At the western end is the Templete, and almost next to this is the Iglesia de la Purísima Concepción, construction of which began during the boom in the religious importance of Caravaca in the 16th century.
Among the items of religious art inside the church is the figure of Nuestra Señora de la Purísima Concepción sculpted by Francisco Fernández Caro, a disciple of Francisco Salzillo.
At the other end of the Glorieta is the Plaza de San Juan de la Cruz, in which since 1986 there has been a status of the saint who created the Convento del Carmen: this monastery was founded 400 years before that date, and still stands alongside.
Further information about Caravaca is available from the tourist office (Plaza de España, 7, telephone 968 702424, email turismo@caravacadelacruz.es
