ARCHIVED - The deterioration of the Mar Menor is already leading to summer cancellations
Tourism representatives from the Mar Menor have suggested setting up tourist buses to ferry visitors to the best beaches
The ‘green soup’ threat once again facing the Mar Menor is already having an impact on tourism, with many establishments reporting cancellations for the summer season by visitors who don’t want to take a chance on the polluted waters of the coast. Experts are planning to trial a method of oxygenating the lagoon to improve conditions but in the meantime, representatives from the hospitality sector will meet with the Minister of Tourism on Friday May 6 to see what can be done about saving the busiest season in the Murcia Region.
The president of the Costa Cálida Tourist Federation, Soledad Díaz, fears that the Mar Menor crisis will drive away holidaymakers who flock to the coast for its numerous stunning beaches, a situation that is all too familiar since the sector took a major hit last August after an episode of anoxia washed up thousands of fish and turned the water a murky green.
One of the options the business owners plan to bring to the table is the creation of a bus service that transfers clients from hotels that aren’t close to a beach suitable for bathing “to the Mediterranean or to other beaches of the Mar Menor that are in good condition.”
The deterioration suffered by the Mar Menor has worsened in recent months as a result of the rains and the subsequent runoff from agricultural land dragging nitrate-laden water down into the lagoon. The cleaning teams and fishermen have been working tirelessly in recent weeks to remove the algae from the shore and according to the estimates of the president of the San Pedro Fishermen's Association, between 40 and 45 tons of mud are being removed daily from the lagoon.
On the plus side, Ms Díaz believes that popular areas like La Manga, Mazarrón and Águilas have tourists that return year after year and are unlikely to change their behaviour this summer; likewise, she is hopeful that the rest of the tourist towns along the coast will see a repeat of last year, with full houses all round.
