Supermarkets and shopping centres are allowed to open in Murcia this Sunday May 10
The date is one of the Region of Murcia’s “festivos de libre apertura”, allowing shops to open on a normally restricted Sunday

The Region of Murcia is gearing up for one of its so-called “festivos de libre apertura”, which means shops and shopping centres are allowed to open on a Sunday that would normally be a day of closure.
These special dates are set each year by the regional government and are designed to boost retail activity during key periods, especially when tourism is picking up or weekends are expected to draw larger crowds.
May 10, 2026 is one of those authorised opening days, meaning many of the Region’s biggest shopping centres, supermarkets and retail parks will be operating as normal despite it being a Sunday.
And given that the weather forecast is dreadful for the weekend, it’s likely plenty of people will be glad of the chance to get out of the rain and have a browse around the shops. Although ironically, Sunday looks to be the best day of the whole weekend.
Here’s a full breakdown of what will be open across the Region of Murcia.
Shopping centres open on May 10, 2026
Most major shopping centres will open their shops, leisure areas and restaurants as usual:
- Nueva Condomina (Murcia): All shops, leisure and restaurants open at normal Sunday hours
- Thader (Murcia): Full opening including shops, hypermarket, restaurants, leisure and gym
- Dos Mares (San Javier): Shops, restaurants and leisure areas open as normal
- Espacio Mediterráneo (Cartagena): Full opening of shops, dining and entertainment
- La Noria Outlet (San Javier): Shops and restaurants open as usual
- Parque Almenara (Lorca): Shops closed, but leisure and restaurants remain open
Supermarkets open on May 10
Not all supermarkets will follow the same schedule, so it’s worth checking before heading out:
- Carrefour: Hypermarkets in Zaraíche, Atalayas, Infante, Águilas, Espacio Mediterráneo and Dos Mares will open as normal. Some Carrefour Express stores may also open. Parque Almenara hypermarket will remain closed
- Alcampo: Open at usual Sunday trading hours
- Mercadona: Closed across the Region, including coastal stores
Other major stores and retail chains
- El Corte Inglés: Murcia stores open 11:00–21:00. Cartagena store closed
- Ikea Murcia: Open as normal
- MediaMarkt: Most stores closed, except the Espacio Mediterráneo branch
- Leroy Merlin: All three stores in the Region open at usual hours
Under Murcia’s retail rules, shops are usually closed on Sundays and public holidays. However, the Region designates a limited number of “festivos de libre apertura” each year.
These are basically pre-approved trading Sundays where restrictions are lifted, allowing shops and large retail centres to open. The idea is to support local commerce, tourism and consumer demand during peak periods.
For shoppers, it simply means one thing: even though it’s a Sunday, May 10 is very much a normal shopping day across much of the Region of Murcia.

Murcia’s second biggest centro comercial has more than just shopping – it’s everything you could want from a day out!

Parque Almenara is one of the largest retail and leisure malls in the Lorca and Águilas area, offering the full ‘all under one roof’ shopping experience, except it is open to the elements!
It has all your favourite brands and shops like Stradivarius and Mango, spread out over two easily accessed levels. There is also a Carrefour, plus larger retail units for electrical products and home and garden goods.
Unlike other shopping centres, Parque Almenara is a shopping mall where the stores are located in a network of streets, like a whole shopping village that covers almost 150,000m2, making it the second largest shopping centre in the Region of Murcia. One of the most striking features of Parque Almenara is its three canvas tents suspended 20 metres above the outdoor area, creating a shaded zone and an oasis of calm right in the middle of the mall.
As well as the opportunity for a day’s retail therapy, Parque Almenara also offers the makings of good night out. There is a 10-pin bowling alley with 20 lanes and an entertainment complex, plus a multiscreen cinema with ten screens showing the latest offerings from Hollywood and the best 3D movies, and even original version English-language films. And with no fewer than eight separate options to grab a bite to eat at the food court, you can stay at the Parque Almenara all day if you want to!
You can even take your dog along with you as pets are allowed into the mall, an animal-friendly place.
How to get there
Parque Almenara is located on the Lorca–Águilas road C-3211 at km 1.9. On a GPS, the coordinates to put in are: N 37º 63´ W -1º 69´
If you’re going by bus, there is a direct bus route that leaves from Apolonia.
