ARCHIVED - Special protection for Kentish plovers nesting on Calarreona beach in Águilas
The species is in danger of disappearing in Spain and the beach has been partly cordoned off to protect nesting sites
Two Kentish plovers are confirmed to be nesting on the beach in Calarreona, in the municipality of Águilas, and the department of Environmental Education has cordoned off the area to ensure maximum protection for the nest.
The bird, which lays its nests on the sand, is in danger due to the disappearance of beaches with dune systems.
The Kentish Plover is a small and charismatic wader of the Charadriidae family that breeds on the shores of saline lakes, lagoons, and coasts, populating sand dunes and marshes.
They are ground-nesting birds, often with a preference for low, open, moist nesting sites away from thick vegetation and human activity.
The department has placed informative signs along the beach to educate visitors about this species and to make them aware of the nests.
This bird species (Charadrius alexandrinus) is especially vulnerable as it lays its eggs directly in the sand, meaning that the hatchlings remain on the floor until they learn to fly.
The eggs are difficult to spot due to their colouring, which is why extreme care has been taken to protect the nests from humans and, especially, from dogs, which is why pet owners are requested to keep dogs on their leads in this area.
The use of machinery and vehicles, such as tractors, on the beach has been suspended until the reproduction period of these birds is over. The eggs will take around 20 days to hatch, after which the beach will be cleaned and prepared for the summer season.
Kentish plovers are not the only species to choose Calarreona beach as their nesting area, as there have also been sightings of the little ringed plover (Charadrius dubius), which is a migratory species.
The little ringed plover, like sea turtles, are known for choosing healthy beaches with good sand on which to nest. This species is also on the list of birds that are under special protection in Spain.
