ARCHIVED - Spanish prices high for phone and internet but low for booze and cigarettes
A new report has placed Spain twelfth on the list for price of living, with prices lower than the European average in 10 of the 12 categories examined.
Consumers in Spain pay 22 per cent more than the European average for mobile phone services and internet, but 13 per cent less for booze and cigarettes, the latest Eurostat Price Level Index report has revealed.
The report is drawn up by comparing prices of goods in 12 categories in 27 European countries, with a mark of 100 considered to be the European average.
Spanish prices were found to be lower than average in all but two of the categories: health and communications.
Health, which includes anything relating to health such as the cost of medicine, dentists, nursing homes and general medical services, was given a mark of 110.4, in other words, 11 per cent higher than the European average.
The price of communications, which includes internet, mobile phones, TV and postal services, was 22 per cent higher than the average. The only European countries that pay more for communications are Norway, Greece, Belgium, Luxembourg, Ireland, Sweden and the Netherlands, the report reveals.
At the other end of the scale, tobacco prices are 18 per cent lower than average in Spain, and alcoholic beverages 10 per cent lower.
Hotels and restaurants are 11 per cent cheaper, with restaurants in Denmark or Norway reported as 70 per cent more expensive by comparison.
Prices in other categories such as Education, which is 10 per cent cheaper in Spain than the European average, can be almost double in Norway or Sweden, for example. Spaniards also pay 8 per cent less for clothes and shoes, 7 per cent less for transport, 6 per cent less for leisure and culture and 5 per cent less for food and non-alcoholic drinks.
All in all, Spain came twelfth on the list with an overall consumer goods price level score of 96.4 per cent, lower than the European average, while France scored 109.9; Germany 108.8 and Italy 102.8.
Switzerland proved to be the most expensive country in Europe, with prices 87 per cent higher than in Spain.
