ARCHIVED - Spanish Health Ministry rejects option of voluntary vaccination with AstraZeneca for under-60s
Spanish residents under 60 will have no choice but to wait their turn and take what they’re given as the health authorities have refused to allow them to voluntarily receive the AstraZeneca vaccine regardless of the possible risks.
Several regions had asked, following the decision to suspend administration of the AstraZeneca vaccine to under-60s due to concerns over the risk of blood clots in younger patients, for those who were willing to take the chance to be able to receive the vaccine voluntarily, but the health authorities have decided that would be unethical and stressed that individual choices have no place in the vaccination process.
The latest update of the ‘Vaccination strategy against Covid-19 in Spain’, published on Wednesday (21 April) by the Ministry of Health, specifies that group nine (individuals aged between 51 and 59) “will receive the vaccine selected for them according to availability, the context of the pandemic and the evidence.”
For the first time, the update also opens the door to the possibility of combining drugs for under-60s who have already had one dose of AstraZeneca vaccine. It now seems that administering a second dose of a different vaccine may be an option for patients left in limbo having received their first shot, but scientific evidence is required before a final decision can be made.
To this end, the Carlos III Health Institute, which reports to the Ministry of Health, presented the first clinical trial this week to study the possibility of administering a dose of Pfizer to under-60s who have had an initial dose of AstraZeneca.
