ARCHIVED - Social centres for pensioners reopen in San Pedro del Pinatar, Lo Pagán and San Javier
The José Benedicto and José Espinosa centres in San Pedro del Pinatar will be offering social activities in their common rooms once again
One of the sectors of society most castigated by the Covid pandemic has been the elderly, who have had to carry the dual burden of being the most vulnerable to the pandemic, as well as frequently being forced to self-isolate alone without the support system provided by family or the network of centres offered by their local authorities.
As increasing numbers of people are fully vaccinated, these centres are slowly re-opening and in the last few days both San Pedro del Pinatar and San Javier have announced that day centres for the elderly are resuming activities.
San Pedro del Pinatar and Lo Pagán have reopened the common areas of their community centres for the elderly, where pensioners can now take part in social activities, such as card or board games, while following Covid guidelines.
The activities in the common rooms will have controlled access and the staff will be enforcing social distancing, as well as the use of face coverings. These centres will also continue providing their hairdressing and information services as usual.
The José Benedicto centre, in San Pedro, and the José Espinosa centre, in Lo Pagán, will be opening from 4 pm until 7.30 pm on Mondays and Sundays and from 9 am until 1 pm from Tuesday to Saturday.
San Javier re-opens centres in Santiago de la Ribera and El Mirador
Last week the equivalent centres in Santiago de la Ribera and El Mirador in the neighbouring San Javier municipality also re-opened after being closed for 15 months due to the pandemic and have resumed some of the workshops and sociable sporting activities normally undertaken.
In order to protect users, capacity is limited to 50 per cent and group sizes for activities are limited to six.
San Javier mayor, José Miguel Luengo said that closing the centres was a measure “necessary for so many older people who, after going through a tough stage because they are the group most affected by the virus, can now resume their lives with the peace of mind that being vaccinated gives them ”. José Miguel Luengo congratulated those present and was confident that "little by little with these small steps we can go back to normality."
