Six dead after truck ploughs through police checkpoint in Sevilla
Four drivers and two Guardia Civil officers were killed in the horror accident in Los Palacios, Seville
Six people died early on Tuesday morning, March 19, when a truck failed to stop at a Guardia Civil checkpoint on the AP-4 near Los Palacios in Sevilla, Spain. The lorry ploughed into a police car and several other vehicles that were stopped on the road, killing two officers and four civilians.
According to initial reports, the driver of the truck may have fallen asleep at the wheel, causing the vehicle to veer off course and collide with the cars and police vehicles. Investigators are currently exploring this theory, but have not ruled out other possible causes.
“The driver of the articulated vehicle, upon receiving signals from the Guardia Civil, manoeuvred suddenly, deviating towards the shoulder and running over the first three official vehicles of the Rapid Action Group (GAR) of the Guardia Civil and at least two other civilian vehicles that were within the device,” a spokesperson said.
Emergency responders and a judicial commission were quickly dispatched to the scene, along with a specialised team from the Guardia Civil’s traffic accident reconstruction unit in Mérida. The team is working to determine the exact sequence of events and gather evidence, including analysing the truck’s tachograph data to determine its speed at the time of the accident.
Commander Rafael Fernández Onety, who was present at the checkpoint at the time of the accident, described the collision as a “scissors” manoeuvre, in which the truck suddenly swerved and cut across the road, striking multiple vehicles.
“The truck has been left parallel to the highway and the cab has been left perpendicular to the road,” he explained, before stressing that the checkpoint was very clearly signposted.
It is the single “most serious incident” he has seen in his almost forty-year career as a police officer.
“It is the most terrible thing I have ever experienced,” the commander added.
The driver of the truck, which was transporting vegetables from La Línea de la Concepción in Cádiz, tested negative for drugs and alcohol.
