ARCHIVED - Second Janssen jab could affect 66,000 people in Murcia while elderly get third dose
Region of Murcia will start giving booster vaccines to 7,400 people in care homes in October, but is still studying Janssen booster jab
Spain’s Public Health Commission announced that it has begun to study whether the two million people vaccinated against coronavirus in Spain with the Janssen vaccine, 65,914 of whom are in the Region of Murcia, should receive a booster dose. Since the Janssen vaccine developed by Johnson&Johnson is the only single-dose Covid vaccine approved by the European Union, this possible booster jab would be the second dose.
At the same time the Regional Ministry of Health in Murcia has approved a plan to administer a third dose of the Covid vaccine as a booster to elderly residents in nursing homes who have received both doses of the Pfizer, Moderna or AstraZeneca vaccines. Starting in the first week of October, a total of 7,400 elderly people in Murcia will receive the booster jab, as well as organ transplant recipients, people being treated with anti-CD20 drugs, those with low immunity on dialysis, patients undergoing cancer treatment and patients over 40 years of age with Down’s syndrome in accordance with a decision on booster jabs from the national Spanish government.
The health authority is delaying its decision on a booster jab for Janssen, however, pending further information. This second dose was requested after outbreaks occurred in prisons in Spain, even though the inmates had been vaccinated with the Janssen vaccine.
Research has shown that the efficacy of Janssen decreases around eight months after being vaccination, and a study by the Johnson&Johnson laboratory stated that an extra dose generates an immune response nine times greater than that obtained 28 days after the administration of a single dose. According to health data, there are currently 447,697 doses of the Janssen vaccine kept in cold storage in Spain waiting to be used but experts in Spain are still divided over the need for Covid booster jabs.
Elderly people living in residential care homes and others with reduced immune systems who will receive a booster jab in Murcia will have to wait until October 4 and the start of the flu vaccination campaign. Meanwhile, health authorities in Murcia announced this week that there will be fewer doses of the flu vaccine available in the region this year.
Covid vaccine update September 16
As of Thursday September 16, 85.2% of the population of Murcia (1,116,909 people) have already received both their Covid jabs or the Janssen single-dose vaccine, while 89.1% have received one of their two doses (1,168,608 people).
In the Region of Murcia up to now, a total 2,164,300 doses of Covid-19 vaccines from Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca and Janssen have been administered – 1,687,865 doses of Pfizer; 398,000 of Moderna; 253,100 of AstraZeneca and 68,300 of Janssen.
