ARCHIVED - Sea level to rise by 15 cm in Murcia in the next 9 years and 55 cm by the year 2100
Rising sea temperatures also forecast as the climate crisis gathers momentum
In recent weeks the issue of the climate crisis and the environment has been in the spotlight in the Region of Murcia on account of the drastic deterioration in conditions in the Mar Menor, but a reminder of the more global threat was provided on Thursday by Teresa Ribera, the acting Minister for Ecological Transition, when she presented a report compiled by specialists in Environmental Hydraulics at the University of Cantabria.
One of the main areas of study addressed is the expected rise in sea levels, a matter of special relevance to Spain, where there are close to 5,000 kilometres of coastline, and one of the conclusions reached is that in the Region of Murcia the increase could be as much as 15 centimetres by 2028 – in only nine years’ time. By the end of the current century the rise is forecast to reach 55 centimetres in the Costa Cálida, while in the Canary Islands and Galicia rises of 80 centimetres are predicted.
This rise in sea levels is mainly due, of course, to the continual melting of the polar icecaps, and almost equally worrying is the forecast that in the worst-case scenario sea temperatures will rise by almost 3 degrees in Murcia by the year 2100. This will imply considerable changes in the habitats of marine animals and flora, the loss of coastal wetlands and of course the erosion of beaches, as well as flooding in coastal areas.
Teresa Ribera’s aim in highlighting these data is to underline the importance of adapting human activity on land and at sea to the changing marine dynamics and the climate, and she pointed out that current legislation and policies fall well short of dealing with the scenarios outlined. According to researcher Íñigo Losada, there is no scenario in which rising sea levels will fail to be apparent within 30 years, with the most important changes taking place in the Canaries, the Balearics, the eastern Mediterranean coast and the north-west of Spain. However, he adds, it is in the second half of the century that the true extent of the “Antarctica effect” will become known.
