Thoughts are already turning to the start of the beach tourism season at Easter
It is still some time before the beach tourism season begins in the Costa Cálida around Easter, which this year falls in early April, but following the extreme weather events of the autumn and winter staff from the Town Hall of Cartagena are continuing the maintenance and cleaning work along the Mediterranean and Mar Menor coastlines of the municipality.
Around 20 workers are making use of machinery to remove the seaweed which has accumulated along the shore and to restore sand dunes and beaches to the best condition possible. Since the passage of Storm Gloria the focus has been on removing sand from seafront promenades and streets close to the sea, especially in La Manga, and now, according to Cartagena Deputy Mayoress Noelia Arroyo, the attention is shifting slightly to the areas of Punta Brava, Los Nietos, Cala Reona (near Cabo de Palos) and other Mediterranean beaches. Last week work was concluded between Playa Paraíso and Cala del Pino at the southern end of the Mar Menor and at the Playa de Levante in Cabo de Palos.
At Punta Brava 70 tons of seaweed were removed, while in Los Nietos permission is being awaited from the Costas department of the national government for a tractor to move in and complete a similar job. This week the machinery will move on to Los Urrutias while repairs to the wall alongside the seafront in Los Nietos continue.
At the same time it is worth remembering that in some areas such as the Playa de Galúa in La Manga seaweed was piled up to form a natural barrier against the waves eroding the sand rather than being removed, and now that the sea has returned to its normal calmer state much of this vegetation has returned to the Mediterranean.
