ARCHIVED - Remodeling of Garganes TRAM stop in Alicante, Line 9 Benidorm-Denia to begin on April 29
The renovation work is part of the TRAM Alicante Modernization Plan and aims to improve accessibility for the new dual low-floor trains
Remodelling work and accessibility improvements on the platforms at the Garganes tram stop in Alicante is due to start on April 29. These upgrades are part of the Modernization Plan being carried out on Line 9 (Benidorm-Denia) and part of Line 1 (Luceros-Benidorm) of the Alicante TRAM.
The budget for these improvements is over 12 million euros and the project is being co-financed by the European Union. The project will affect 14 stops along Lines 1 and 9, where most of the work will be carried out at night, in order to not affect the normal railway or commercial service.
The Alicante Metropolitan Tram light rail service uses different modes of rail service, such as a modern tramway in the centre of the city, which turns into a tram-train between Alicante and Benidorm as it heads out along the coast. Then, the rail service links into a traditional diesel-powered commuter rail service (Line 9) joining Benidorm to Dénia.
The Modernization Plan aims to remodel the current platforms so that they can accommodate the new dual low-floor trains, as well as carrying out other modernization work.
The first renovations started in 2020 in the L’Alfás del Pi station and the Camí Coves stop in the municipality of Benidorm and, furthermore, renovation works between Teulada and Dénia affected around 17 kilometers of track.
The current project has divided the renovations in two parts, the first of which consisted in dismantling the Disco Benidorm, Benidorm and Hospital Vila tram stops.
The second part of the project includes lowering and renovating the platforms at several other tram stops: Camí Coves, Alfaz del Pi, El Albir, Altea, Olla Altea, Cala Piteres, Garganes, Cap Negret, Teulada, Gata de Gorgos and Dénia, some of which have already been renovated.
The main reason for these renovations is that the Line 9 track is made for a traditional diesel trains and, although the Line underwent building work in 2020 to allow the tram-train which currently runs to Benidorm to continue its journey, the access point from the platform to the tram (or train) is currently too high for the new dual trains, which have low access points.
Altogether, the cost of the improvements on the railway services in the province of Alicante surpasses 30 million euros.
