Region of Murcia wakes to smoke as Spanish wildfires continue to burn
Changing winds have carried smoke from fires in central Spain and Castellón into Murcia
Residents across the Region of Murcia woke to the smell of smoke on Monday July 27 after changing winds carried wildfire smoke from central Spain and Castellón into the area.
Several local councils and police forces confirmed the haze was drifting in from major fires burning in Madrid, Toledo, Ávila and the Vall de Uxó area of Castellón. They stressed there are no active wildfires in the Region of Murcia.
As a precaution, authorities are advising older people, young children and anyone with respiratory conditions to keep their windows closed until the smoke clears.
Emergency services have also asked residents not to call 112 simply because they can smell smoke, reminding people to keep emergency lines free for genuine incidents. They're also urging the public to rely on official sources for updates.
The smoke comes as firefighters continue battling a series of devastating wildfires across central Spain.
The largest blaze, near Burgohondo in Ávila province, has already burned more than 50,000 hectares, making it the biggest wildfire ever recorded in Spain. Together, the fires in Ávila, Madrid and Toledo have destroyed almost 77,000 hectares of land.
Although officials say conditions are gradually improving and parts of the fire perimeter are now under control, crews remain on the ground tackling hotspots and working to stop the flames from spreading further. Tens of thousands of people have also been evacuated or confined as the emergency continues.
