ARCHIVED - Region of Murcia rails against requiring British tourists to prove funds
Spain requires UK holidaymakers to have 100 euros per day spending money
The regional government in Murcia has openly criticised Spain’s decision that requires travellers from the UK to prove that they have a minimum of 100 euros per day to spend on their trip, along with proof of where they will be staying when they arrive. The hospitality sector of the Region has also jumped on the bandwagon, insisting that now “is not the time for impositions” when they are still picking up the pieces from the coronavirus pandemic.
The issue has been well publicised in both Spain and Britain, with tour operators and the Foreign Office warning that passengers arriving from the UK can be checked at random, and should have certain documentation ready for inspection.
Despite the furore it has caused, the requirement is nothing new: the Schengen Area Border Code has always specified that travellers from third countries provide proof of funds, proof of address and in some cases, a return ticket. It is Spain’s decision to impose the measure on British tourists post-Brexit which has exacerbated the situation.
Now, business owners in the Region of Murcia fear the requirement will impact British tourism, which is the most important to the community.
From January to September 2021, the United Kingdom remained the largest issuer of international tourism to the Murcian community, with 70,187 visitors, or 30.5% of the total. In this same period, British holidaymakers also spent the most (75.9 million euros).
From the perspective of the Ministry of Tourism, the central government’s “arbitrary actions” serve only to “reduce the competitiveness of Spain as a tourist destination compared to other markets.”
According to the president of the Association of Hoteliers of Cartagena and Comarca (Hostecar), Juan José López, the summer season in the Region has already been disappointing for hoteliers, with fewer tourists than expected and those who have arrived spending far less than usual thanks to inflation.
If the Spanish government continues to impose these restrictions on British travellers, “other countries, if they are a bit clever, will take advantage" and "steal" tourists who could be in the Murcian sun, he concluded.
