ARCHIVED - Price of diesel in Spain plummets for third consecutive week
Petrol has also taken a nosedive, but the cost of both fuels in Spain remains above the EU average
Winter is already upon us and as we begin to fork out more cash on heating our homes, it’s good to know that at least one major consumer product is continuing on a downward trajectory: fuel.
The average price of petrol in Spain has finally fallen by 1.2% after two solid weeks of increases but it’s diesel that is stealing the show with a price drop of 3.24%, it’s third consecutive decrease.
There’s still an 11-cent price difference between the two fuels though, something which was virtually unheard of until recently. This is the 15th consecutive week when diesel has been more expensive than petrol.
The average price of a litre of petrol is currently at 1.764 euros (before the government’s 20 cent per litre discount is applied), while diesel has dropped to 1.876 euros, its lowest level since the week of October 10.
Although still pretty expensive, both fuel options remain well below the highs experienced during the summer, when both exceeded two euros per litre.
However, it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that fuel will become a costly commodity once more since the Spanish government is considering whether to scrap the universal 20 cent bonus in the new year, and instead just offer it to a select few who need it the most.
When we include the subsidy, the price of a litre of petrol is 3.37% more expensive than it was this time last year, while diesel has skyrocketed by 21.36%.
At the current levels, the cost of unleaded 95 in Spain remains above the European Union average, which today stands at 1.729 euros per litre. The story is similar for diesel, which costs, on average, 1.851 euros in the EU.
