Primary schoolchildren’s road safety classes are to include scooter riding hints
For many years pupils at primary schools in the municipality of Cartagena have received road safety classes as part of their education, benefitting from the collaboration of the Policía Local with the schools they attend, and this year as well as learning how to behave as cyclists and pedestrians the 1,000 or so children taking part will receive instruction in the correct use of electric scooters.
New local laws regarding the use of scooters of this kind came into force in Cartagena in December, introducing fines for those who ride while wearing ear-phones, using mobile phones or failing to wear reflector jackets and turn on lights during the hours of darkness.
Like it or not, it appears that electric scooters are here to stay, and unfortunately they do bring with them a certain element of risk for both riders and pedestrians. For this reason it is encouraging to know that in Cartagena youngsters are being educated from an early age in how to use them responsibly and safely – if only some of their elders were receiving the same instructions!
