ARCHIVED - Police probe into syringe attack on Alicante-El Campello TRAM passenger
A 19-year-old girl from El Campello in Alicante province was left dizzy and nauseous after allegedly being jabbed with a needle
The Guardia Civil in El Campello has launched an investigation into an alleged syringe attack on a 19-year-old girl whilst she was travelling on the d'Alacant TRAM from Alicante's Mercado station to her hometown of El Campello.
The young woman was reportedly jabbed with an unknown substance around 11pm on June 11, leaving her feeling extremely dizzy and nauseous.
According to her father, the alleged victim has no idea exactly when she was pricked with a needle, but believes it was after a friend she was travelling with got off the TRAM at the Colonia Romana station in Albufereta.
"The TRAM was packed with people and suddenly she started to feel sick," the young woman's father told Spanish press. "Her head was spinning and she felt like vomiting, so she had to lie down on the floor of the carriage and phoned her family to pick her up at the El Campello stop," he added.
At first the young woman didn't know what had caused the sudden adverse symptoms, but two days later she noticed a bruise on her leg and went to have it checked out.
"We thought it might have been caused by a mosquito, but at the hospital they told us clearly that it was a syringe prick," said the woman's dad.
As more than 48 hours had passed since the TRAM journey, a blood test couldn't confirm whether she had been injected with a substance or if she was just jabbed with a needle, but in line with preventive protocol for such cases, the young woman was given HIV and hepatitis medication.
There have been no other reports of suspected syringe attacks on the same night, but the National Police in Denia is still investigating several complaints from young girls claiming they were injected with a substance, possibly liquid ecstasy, at a nightclub in the coastal town several weeks ago.
Reports of similar attacks have reportedly risen in the UK and France.
