ARCHIVED - Police believe trail of 13 fires across two days in Murcia city is arson
Local Police and the Murcia Fire Brigade suspect arson as the fires are unusual despite recent high temperatures.
Local Police are investigating a series of fires across two days in the Murcia city urban area and are not ruling out arson as they believe the alleged arsonists had potentially planned an ‘arson route’ through districts and neighbourhoods of the city.
Up to 13 fires in just two days, seven on Monday and another six on Tuesday were reported between 2pm on Monday and 1 am on Tuesday in Cabezo de Torres, Los Dolores, Rincón de Beniscornia, Barrio del Progreso and Barriomar - which burned 7,500 square metres at the gates of the chemical factory Destilerías Muñoz Gálvez.
In addition to these, fires broke out in Los Ramos, Alquerías, Santiago el Mayor, Rincón de Beniscornia and Llano de Brujas between 1 pm and 3.30 pm. In Llano de Brujas, the flames burnt through a courtyard full of stacked pallets belonging to a company in the area and reached the roof of a nearby house.
Local Police and the Murcia Fire Brigade believe that because these areas were quiet at the time of the fires and that arson cannot be ruled out.
Based on that hypothesis, investigations are continuing .
