It has a definite feeling of ‘too little, too late’, but the recently-elected council in Orihuela Costa has delivered food trucks to three of the area’s beaches that have been without any facilities whatsoever all year.

The beaches of Orihuela Costa, one of the most popular tourist destinations along the Mediterranean coast, have lost part of their charm this summer season thanks to the absence of the traditional beach bars, or chiringuitos as they’re known in Spanish.

Delays over awarding new contracts meant that the area’s shores were without not only these favourite eateries but sun loungers, umbrellas and water sports as well. In fact, it was only last month that chemical toilets were installed.

With the contract process in a tangle, new councillor for the Costas Manuel Mestre had the unpopular job of informing the public that there would be no beach bars during the summer of 2023. Following this announcement, the Orihuela City Council decided to make a drastic change to the method of bidding for these beach services: for the high season of 2024, individuals will be allowed to apply for the lease at each beach, rather than a single company running the entire Orihuela Costa show.

This is little comfort to today’s beachgoers though, who are hankering after an ice-cream, cool beer or snack, so in an effort to remedy the situation somewhat the council has installed food trucks in the car parks beside three of the most popular beaches: La Caleta in Cabo Roig, Cala Capitán, also in Cabo Roig and Cala Bosque in La Zenia.

These food trucks serve a wide variety of food and drinks and are open every day between 8am and 8pm.
