One person was killed and two seriously injured in a nasty accident which occurred on the RM-530 between Mula and Archena on Sunday lunchtime.
The accident occurred near to the La Palmera restaurant, between the municipalities of Archena and Ojós, a stretch of road known locally as an accident black spot on which two other people have been killed in recent years.
Following the accident, local mayor, José Emilio Palazón, said that he would be requesting that the DGT install a speed control on this section of road, as drivers frequently exceed the 90 k/h speed limit.
In this case, the deceased and injured, all from Cehegín, were travelling in a BMW and were hit head-on by a Volkswagen Golf car driven by a young Moroccan national, who for reasons unknown, veered directly into their path.
He was uninjured and following the accident, fled the scene, running off into the countryside.
He was seen by local residents who informed the police of his whereabouts and he was arrested.
According to the regional Spanish media, he is known to the police.
The driver of the BMW and an occupant of the rear seat were seriously injured, and the co-driver was killed on impact. The two wounded were taken to the Morales Meseguer hospital in Murcia.
