ARCHIVED - Olives collected in Murcia parks to provide 8,000 litres of oil for charities
1,600 trees in the parks and gardens of Murcia will yield 30 to 40 tons of olives
The many public parks and gardens in the city of Murcia contain over 1,600 olive trees, and unlike the decorative orange trees which bring colour to streets in the regional capital the fruit they produce are of high quality and are used to produced oil.
It is currently the time of year when council workers in the Parks and Gardens department of the Town Hall are engaged in collecting the olive crop, and with the harvest expected to reach between 30,000 and 40,000 kilos during the autumn it has been announced that the oil produced from them will be donated to charity. Many residents assume that the efforts to collect the olives are made purely in order to reduce the inconvenience of the fruit accumulating on pavements and in parks, but in fact the harvest will be pressed and the resulting 8,000 litres or so of oil will be distributed to charity organizations which help those in need in the municipality, according to councillor José Guillén.
