ARCHIVED - Number of Covid cases in Spain rise by 8,532 over the weekend
968 new cases were recorded in the last 24 hours although this figure is known to be inaccurate as the three major focal points of outbreaks have not reported their latest figures through the Ministry
The latest data relating to the evolution of the Covid virus in Spain was presented on Monday evening and spans the gap between Friday evening and Monday evening as the Spanish Ministry of Health no longer presents breakdown figures to the media at the weekend.
During the 24 hour period between Sunday and Monday evenings a total of 968 positive cases were diagnosed in Spain.
However, if the published totals for Friday and Monday are compared, the difference between the two is actually 8,532, as the figures reported by the autonomous communities are adjusted and confirmed.
This does represent a considerable increase when compared to the same period last week when the figure was 6,361.
The reporting method used by the Spanish Ministry does cause considerable confusion as some regions, Cataluña being the most visible at the moment, will report their number of cases as being for example 1200, but when the figures are presented at a national level, only 90 cases are shown. This is because Cataluña includes both rapid tests and swab tests in its own figures, whereas the Spanish Health Ministry only includes swab tests in the official figures. It also has a rather complicated system of only officially presenting verified cases in the “diagnosed in the last 24 hours” figures, so many cases included in totals given by the 17 regional health authorities do not appear in the daily breakdowns, but tend to suddenly appear in the national totals over the weekend. It is confusing, and causes endless arguments on expat social media about why the figures published “don´t match the Worldometer totals.”
In general, by the end of the week, they tend to equalise.
It has been noted today that the figure of 968 for the last 24 hours is lower than that of Friday when 1525 new cases were reported, but Madrid, Catalunya and Navarra, three of the worst affected regions in Spain, have not submitted figures since before the weekend due to technical issues, so the 968 is known to be inaccurate. It will be adjusted at some point during the week.
"We are not in a serious situation at all, but we are seeing a significant increase in transmission," explained Fernando Simón, Director of the Center for the Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies (CCAES) who said in the press briefing that the situation "is not comparable to the situation a few months ago, but we are experiencing continuous increases" that are being closely monitored by the authorities.
He explained why the Government believes that the situation is still under control and that the increase in positives is largely related to better detection capacity. He said that the percentage of asymptomatic cases is above 60% while the lethality of the virus in recent weeks has dropped to between 0.4 and 0.6% so fewer people are dying.
A lot of this is due to the fact that the average age of positive cases has dropped considerably and that younger people tend to transmit the virus rather than suffer from it.
This doesn´t detract from the fact that there are more cases being detected of course.
The 968 new cases are distributed as follows: 101 in Andalusia, 586 in Aragon, seven in Asturias, 21 in the Canary Islands, 22 in Cantabria, seven in Castilla-La Mancha, eleven in Castilla y León, 51 in the Valencian Community, 14 in Extremadura, 15 in Galicia, 10 in Murcia and 123 in the Basque Country.
In the last week, 26 people diagnosed with coronavirus have died (15 in Aragon, two in Castilla-La Mancha, one in Castilla y León, two in Catalonia, four in the Valencian Community, one in Extremadura and one in Madrid), while the Friday this figure stood at 12. This brings the national total up to 28,445.
In the past seven days there have been 562 hospital admissions (127,350 in total): 46 in Andalusia, 265 in Aragon, seven in the Balearic Islands, four in the Canary Islands, 13 in Cantabria, 26 in Castilla y León, 45 in Catalonia, 52 in Valencia, five in Extremadura, eleven in Galicia, 40 in Madrid, 17 in Murcia, 21 in Navarra, nine in the Basque Country and one in La Rioja.
Outbreaks
The number of outbreaks continues to expand and there are now 560 active known outbreaks accounting for more than 6,300 cases. During the last four days, 77 new focal points have been added to the list.
