ARCHIVED - No quarantine for fully vaccinated individuals in Spain who encounter positive Covid cases
Two PCR tests will still be required; one immediately after the contact and another seven days later

Although the vaccinations programme in Spain is continuing apace and on Wednesday the Spanish Health Authority expects to announce that 15 million people are fully vaccinated, new cases of coronavirus are announced every day, with Spain currently averaging between four and six thousand new cases daily.
Many of the new cases are diagnosed following contact tracing, a process to detect possible contacts of anyone who has given a positive result and may, in turn, be infected.
The Spanish Health Ministry defines a close contact as a person who has spent more than 15 minutes within a 24 hour period at a distance of less than two metres from an infected person; this could equally be sitting behind an infected individual on a bus journey or living in the same household as an infected individual.
Up until this week, anyone found to have fulfilled this criteria had to self-isolate for 10 days, regardless of whether they had been vaccinated or not.
However, this has now changed and the Health Ministry announced on Tuesday (June 22) that it would no longer be necessary for anyone who is fully vaccinated to quarantine for 10 days if they have come into close contact with an infected individual.
Studies are still underway to ascertain to what degree an individual who is fully vaccinated can transmit the virus, even if they themselves are asymptomatic, as it is known that even those who are themselves protected can still contribute to the spread of the virus, hence the continued concern about the possibility of international travel spreading the more infectious variants.
Studies in the UK indicate that those who have been immunized continue to transmit the virus, albeit to a lesser degree than those who have yet to be vaccinated.
With this in mind, the authorities are still asking those who have been vaccinated and come into contact with a positive case to take two PCR tests; one immediately upon detection and the second seven days later.
It is also known that those who have been vaccinated can still develop Covid-19, but the risk of this being a serious or fatal case is considerably reduced.
Although studies are also examining this situation, the Health Ministry continues to recommend that those who have been fully immunized continue to observe preventative measures.
On Thursday the cabinet is expected to fully approve the measure announced by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez that masks are no longer mandatory in open-air public spaces in which two metres of social distancing can be observed, although several of the autonomous regions are pressuring the government to continue the mandatory use of masks in concerts, football matches etc.
On Tuesday, the Ministry also recommended that those who are fully immunized avoid “vulnerable and unvaccinated people ”, avoid crowded events and continue to wear a face mask during social interactions.
