ARCHIVED - No free camping and more disabled access: Murcia introduces new campsite and caravan laws
Spain’s Murcia Region has given the green light to new motorhome and camping regulation

Murcia has approved a new regulation governing tourist accommodation in the form of campsites and areas for motorhomes, caravans, campervans and similar vehicles, in addition to the existing campervan and motorhome camping laws in Spain.
The Minister of Tourism, Marcos Ortuño, explained that the new camping law has been created in response to the demands of the tourist sector, taking into account contributions from the Association of Campsites of the Region of Murcia and of businessmen and professionals related to motorhome tourism.
There are currently around 18 campsites in operation in the Region of Murcia, with a total of 14,731 places to pitch up, and 29 areas for caravans and motorhomes, with a capacity for 667 parking places.
The Murcia government says the new law aims to improve the quality of the existing camping accommodation and allows new campsites to be built more easily, in the same way as such laws exist for hotels, hostels, flats and short-term tourist rental apartments.
So what can and can’t you do under the new campsite and camping law in Murcia?
Murcia’s new campsite and caravan legislation brings into force 5 major changes to camping in the Region:
- Under the new Murcia camping rules, you cannot camp for free. The regulation establishes that free camping may not be carried out by motorhomes, caravans, campervans or similar, in order to avoid crowds, especially in natural areas. The text indicates the conditions that must be met in order for these vehicles to be considered to be parked and not camped.
- Campsites and motorhome areas may only be located in places where, in addition to urban planning regulations, nature protection, coastline, cultural heritage, public watercourses and flooding and other regulations are respected.
- The decree also regulates, for the first time ever, the areas for motorhomes, caravans, campervans and similar, which are united in a single category. For campsites, a new categorisation system has been introduced that uses stars in the same way as hotels are rated on a five-star system. This also includes ‘glamping’ or ‘glamorous camping’ sites.
- The law also introduces the concept of “unity of operation”, meaning that all the accommodation activity carried out in a campsite must be managed by the same business owner and.
- All campsites and motorhome areas must be wheelchair accessible. It will now be compulsory for all of them to have access for people with disabilities, including the car parks, entrances and exits, toilets and other facilities.
Motorhome and camping tourism is becoming more and more popular in Spain’s Murcia Region, and the new rules promise to improve the camping experience for caravanners and holidaymakers coming to the south of Spain.
