Cartagena Town Hall invests in replacements after the storm damage of the winter
The Town Hall of Cartagena has announced that a fund of 125,000 euros awarded to the municipality by the ITREM regional tourism authorities is to be dipped into to provide new street furniture and fittings along the seafront of the Mar Menor, mostly in areas such as Los Nietos.
During the two “gota fría” storms of September and December 2019 and Storm Gloria last month the damage suffered by the beaches and seafront on the inland shore of the Mar Menor was considerable, and in response the Town Hall is investing in 278 modules of beach walkway, 25 wooden flooring areas, 25 foot showers, 45 waste bins and 5 shaded pergolas, all of them replacements for structures and facilities which were either damaged or washed away during the extreme weather events of the last five months.
At the same time, Deputy Mayoress Noelia Arroyo explains that re-surfacing work in the streets of Los Nietos will begin over the next few days, and that the Town Hall will take on the responsibility for maintenance on the promenade of Los Nietos while awaiting a renewal of the commitment from the national government to perform this task. As soon as the government’s Coasts department has repaired the section which suffered the worst damage, she says, Town Hall staff will restore the rest of the seafront walk.
In the meantime, the Deputy Mayoress adds, work to clean up the sand dunes and restore sand along the coastline in Islas Menores and Mar de Cristal is continuing in collaboration with the national and regional governments, and this work is soon to be extended to Los Urrutias and Los Nietos.
