ARCHIVED - New cat houses for ferals installed in Islas Menores and the Archaeological Park of Molinete
These kennels join four more which have already been placed in different parts of Cartagena, including Cabo de Palos and Los Urrutias
The Health department in Cartagena has installed two new houses for feral cats, one in the area surrounding the Archaeological Park of Molinete and another in Islas Menores.
The kennels will provide shelter for strays in the area as well as food supplied by the Cuatro Gatos Association.
These two kennels are the last installations in a project which started at the end of 2020 and which has included the installation of cat houses in Cabo de Palos, Los Urrutias, Villalba and Los Carriones.
Representatives from the Cuatro Gatos Association were also present at the installation, as they have reached agreement with the local council to look after the feral colonies inhabiting the kennels.
The plans also include the entrapment and neutering of cats living in feral colonies in order to limit their expansion, but also ensure that the cats are healthy and not spreading disease.
The project aims to improve animal welfare and protect public health within the municipality and enable feral cats to continue inhabiting public areas, but without being a nuisance to local residents.
A similar initiative, which microchips, vaccinates and castrates feral cats in collaboration with the Animur animal protection federation, has already been in place in Cartagena for some time.
Although there are no concrete plans to install more of these kennels for stray cats, the deputy Mayor has stated that the council is working towards acquiring new feline houses for other parts of the municipality and will continue to promote animal welfare in Cartagena.
