ARCHIVED - Murcian Trovero dies at 108 years old
El Tío Juan Rita has been the face of Murcian folk for many years and is known throughout the region
El Tío Juan Rita was one of the most instantly recognisable figures of Murcian cultural traditions and was known throughout the region for his contribution to the oral traditions and folk music of Murcia. He died on Wednesday morning at his home in Totana, and flags were lowered to half-mast as a mark of respect in the municipalities of Totana and Aledo.
Last summer, Uncle Juan Rita was awarded the Region's Gold Medal and honoured as “a living legend of traditions”.
Trovero best translates as “troubadour” and he performed all over the region with the Cuadrilla of Aledo, throughout his life, singing at festive and cultural events and gatherings of Cuadrillas.
Juan Tudela Piernas was born on February 14th, 1912, Valentine's Day and had three children. He became known as “Juan Rita” after spending several formative years herding sheep as his family had done before him, as when sheep were herded into a corral, he would call 'rita, rita, rita'.
