ARCHIVED - Murcia Weather Update July 22: Temperatures above 40 degrees expected this weekend
A blistering high of 43 degrees could be experienced in some areas of the Murcia region
The scorching temperatures experienced so far this July show no signs of abating and in fact, things are going to get decidedly more toasty in the coming days, with a mass of warm air from North Africa sending the thermometers shooting up to a breathtaking 43 degrees in some areas.
The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has on Thursday (July 22) amplified its previous severe heat warning for the Guadalentín Valley, Lorca and Águilas to include all of the region except the area surrouding the Mar Menor. Thus, 38 degrees can be expected in the Guadalentín Valley, Lorca and Águilas, but the warning has now been extended also to the Vega del Segura and the Northwest.
Aemet reports that on Friday (July 23) temperatures will reach 40 degrees in the Northwest and Vega del Segura and 39-40 degrees in the Altiplano and the Guadalentín Valley, Lorca and Águilas.
According to sources from the Emergency Coordination Center, the highest temperatures are expected for Saturday (July 24) , when the thermometer will reach a sweltering 43 degrees in areas of the Guadalentín Valley and Vega del Segura, or 41º in the Altiplano and the Northwest.
According to the Association of Southeast Meteorologists, AMETSE, the coming nights will offer little reprieve so don’t expect to get much sleep over the coming days.
What is known as an ‘equatorial temperature’ is likely to be reached throughout the Region on both Saturday and Sunday night, where the thermometers are unlikely to fall below 25 degrees.
Murcia will not be the only area to feel the heat as the weekend approaches with much of Spain on alert for extremely high temperatures, and Alicante is facing into its third heatwave of the year.
Here are the maximum temperatures you can expect in the coming days:
Caravaca de la Cruz: Friday – 40; Saturday – 41; Sunday - 38
Cartagena: Friday – 33; Saturday – 33; Sunday - 31
Lorca: Friday – 39; Saturday – 44; Sunday - 36
Murcia: Friday – 40; Saturday – 42; Sunday - 38
Yecla: Friday – 38; Saturday – 41; Sunday - 37
