ARCHIVED - Murcia gets 85-million-euro tax return but ordinary people are unlikely to see any of that money
After its windfall Murcia has promised to spend 15 million euros per day in 2022, but history shows they always underdeliver
Spain’s Hacienda Tax Office will pay the Region of Murcia tax returns of around 85 million euros that were still outstanding from its VAT bill for 2017, and which the regional government of Murcia had sued for.
In exchange for withdrawing the legal proceedings, the Murcian government has assured that the Ministry of Finance will repay the 85 million in overpaid taxes that “belong to the people of Murcia”, according to the regional President.
But the question remains whether it is the people of Murcia who will actually see this money, or just the government coffers. In 2021, the Region of Murcia collected 2.8 billion euros in taxes, 13.9% more than it did in 2020, but spent less than half of its yearly budget, leaving 100 million euros unspent on planned projects.
Now the Region’s new budget for 2022 is due to come into force this Friday, and will reach the record figure of 5.403 billion euros. This is an increase of 72.2 million compared to 2021 and almost 600 million compared to 2020, but it’s all for naught if the government persistently falls short of its spending targets.
For this year, there is a projected investment of 15 million euros per day, of which 12 million will be go towards public services, including 6 million per day for the health service, 4.5 million per day for education and 1.4 million per day for social policies.
Time will tell if all this money will actually materialise, or if the authorities in Murcia once again woefully underdeliver on their investment promises.
