ARCHIVED - Multifunctional field borders encourage biodiversity in Mazarrón
An initiative seeks to support pollinating insects and reduce soil erosion on farmland in Murcia
The naturalists’ association ANSE has been collaborating in Mazarrón with a group called “Setos Multifuncionales para Agricultura y Biodiversidad en la Región de Murcia” to plant hedgerows and field borders in the countryside and establish a corridor along which pollinating insects such as bees can thrive.
The “Paisaje y Agricultura Sostenible” group is partly funded by a grant from the regional government of Murcia and is formed by a series of agricultural concerns in the Region, collaborating with the IMIDA and CEBAS-CSIC research institutes as well as ANSE. Among the hedgerow planting initiatives undertaken, apart from those in Mazarrón, are others in Águilas, Jumilla and various locations in the Campo de Cartagena.
In total some 30,000 bushes are being planted in order to limit soil erosion, support the populations of native wildlife and reduce carbon dioxide levels in the air, helping farmers to engage in more environmentally friendly agriculture based on the preservation of natural ecosystems.
