Mercadona set to buy over 11,000 tonnes of Murcia grapes in 2025

Mercadona is upping its grape purchases from the Region of Murcia for 2025, with plans to buy more than 11,000 tonnes - that’s nearly a 10% rise on last year and will account for 52% of Mercadona’s total grape sales.

This already makes up more than half of Mercadona’s total grape sales, showing just how committed the supermarket giant is to backing local growers. The company works closely with Murcia suppliers Agronativa in Alhama and Moyca Grapes in Totana to bring these fresh fruits to shelves right across Spain and Portugal.

Their grape season stretches from early June to late November, covering the prime harvest months. Beyond Murcia, Mercadona stocks seedless grapes from Alicante and Cádiz when quality allows. After the national season wraps up, shoppers can find grapes from Brazil and Peru on the shelves to keep enjoying the fruit all year round.

As the year ends, grape sales, both fresh and tinned, traditionally soar thanks to the cherished Spanish custom of eating twelve grapes at midnight on New Year’s Eve to bring good luck for the coming year.

Mercadona’s purchases in Spain last year reached an impressive €29 billion, and the company stands firmly behind fair trade and local produce initiatives. It has long been a supporter of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food’s projects and adheres to the Code of Good Business Practices to make sure farmers and suppliers are treated fairly.

This focus on local sourcing and ethical buying practices shows Mercadona’s dedication to not only feeding its customers quality produce but also supporting Spain’s agricultural communities.
