ARCHIVED - Mazarrón Mayor loses patience with second home owners ignoring lockdown orders
Cases of Covid-19 have increased from 1 to 13 in a week in the Mazarrón municipality
Intolerance of those breaching lockdown orders is increasing as the death toll rises.
The media has been working its butt off in extremely challenging conditions over the last few weeks to keep people informed about the current Covid-19 outbreak, ensuring that nobody can be in any doubt about the seriousness of this outbreak, the danger it poses to the general public, the high risk of contamination through ANY contact and the rising death toll.
Here in Spain we had 102,000 cases yesterday and 9,053 deaths recorded as of lunchtime. Today it is highly likely that the death count will creep over the 10,000 mark, so there can be no doubt that this virus is a dangerous adversary and it requires the co-operation of ALL of us to limit its spread
One of the biggest problems coastal areas have been facing is the number of second home- owners who have been driving here, putting the local population at risk. Most of the major outbreaks of Covid-19 are in the cities, and these are the people who own holiday homes here.
The first lockdown of the Costa Cálida occurred following the mass migration of families from Madrid three weeks ago tomorrow after schools were shut down but since then the problem has been more local, with families from Cartagena city and Murcia city driving to the coast at the weekend.
Police have increased the number of roadblocks and have been stopping drivers, but during the last two weekends a considerable number of people have still been arriving at their holiday homes on the coast.
The Mayor of Mazarrón has issued a “Bando” warning that increased fines will be issued to anyone found to be breaching the national State of Emergency and travelling to second residences in the municipality.
Local police and Guardia Civíl will be mounting additional patrols and roadblocks at the weekend in order to carry out more intensive checks, although the issuing of a Bando is little more than political hot air if the police don´t respond to the calls of residents reporting the arrival of “weekenders” as has been the case for the last two weeks.
So if your neighbours arrive for a weekend break putting you and your family at increased risk from contagion, call the police and make sure they know about it.
LOCKDOWN MEANS LOCKDOWN!
Remember: STAY AT HOME. STAY SAFE AND DO YOUR BIT TO REDUCE THE SPREAD OF CORONAVIRUS.

Our local area groups are as follows. These are designed to filter locally specific information and may be used by clubs, charities, any of the businesses who work with us to ensure information is available to residents in English and for those living in the specific areas. They are not buy and sell groups, do not accept any bickering or argumentative so and so's, are not "open for any old rubbish" pages, and are not trying to compete with your local comunity groups, they are specifically for sharing good, relevant local information and we hope you will use them for that during this difficult time.

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212) if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
