ARCHIVED - Mass vaccination of 20 to 29 year olds begins in Valencia region
105,000 doses will be administered in the region's three provinces, including Alicante.
The generalised vaccination of 20 to 29-year-olds begins this week in the Valencia region with 105,000 doses expected to be administered.
Some rural areas have already started immunisating this particular younger age group, with the first jabs given last week, but the Ministry of Health is extending the roll-out across the region at major vaccination points from today, Monday, July 26.
"During this week the vaccination of young people over 20 years of age will be considerably accelerated," says the region's health minister, Ana Barceló, while encouraging young people to "participate and get vaccinated in order to achieve immunity throughout the Valencian Community, which will allow us to beat the pandemic".
A further 307,615 doses of vaccine are also expected to be administered to other age age groups, with 158,000 jabs earmarked to complete the vaccination of people between 30 and 39, and 45,000 allocated to 40 to 49-years-old still waiting for their second jab.
In addition, more than 3,000 vaccines will be given to university students taking part in the Erasmus (European Community Action Scheme) who received their first dose in the last week of June and early July.
New restrictions came into force across the region today, with curfews in 77 municipalities, to stem a fifth wave of the pandemic which has seen the 14-day cumulative incident rate skyrocket to 541 per 100,000 inhabitants - the ninth highest in the country which has a national average of 659 cases - and a 30 per cent increase in hospitalisations in a week.
The region's president, Ximo Puig, assured the limitations will go hand-in-hand with an "acceleration of the vaccination campaign".
