ARCHIVED - Major flood-prevention project in San Javier to be completed by the end of July
Huge concrete drainage infrastructures are being installed on Calle Jabalina to protect the area against heavy rain
The project to increase the drainage capacity of the Macodesa dry riverbed in San Javier, which aims to reduce the risk of flooding on Calle Jabalina in the event of heavy rain, is due to be completed at the end of July.
Around 150,000 euros have been invested into this project, which started in the middle of May, and once the work is completed, there will be pre-cast concrete frames at either side of the walkway that goes through Jabalina park along with a water collector, with two storage areas for excess water, to drain surplus surface water out of the park.
In the cases of more extreme weather, the green areas and elements of the park will have added protection in case the run-off water exceeds the capacity of the water collector.
This part of San Javier was badly affected by the DANA storm in 2019, which caused flooding in many parts of the Region of Murcia, and the Mayor, José Miguel Luengo, has reinforced the importance of this project, as Calle Jabalina is an important transit street within San Javier
Another water collection system has already been installed on Avenida Miguel Ángel Blanco and two other connected water collectors, on Avenida Mar Menor and Avenida Neptuno, have been commissioned by the regional government, with an investment of over 5 million euros.
All of these projects are part of the municipal efforts to reduce the consequences of torrential rain, which is becoming increasingly frequent due to climate change, and prevent damage to infrastructures, homes and businesses in San Javier.
