Click HereThe warnings issued by Aemet that another gota fría storm was likely to hit the Mar Menor and other coastal areas of the Region of Murcia on Monday evening and Tuesday have proved well founded, and after over 100 millimetres of rain fell in Los Alcázares, including 70 mm in an hour, the streets of the town are again under water.
All of the indications are that this storm will not be as severe as the one which caused widespread flooding in Murcia in September, but over the last few years it has been proven time and time again that Los Alcázares is particularly susceptible to flooding as water cascades towards the Mar Menor from Torre Pacheco and the farmland of the Campo de Cartagena. As Tuesday dawned the Town Hall was already requesting help from emergency services outside the municipality and the council in the city of Murcia was one of the first to respond, dispatching three vehicles and 12 members of the fire brigade to assist in ensuring the safety of residents.
Anticipating the deluge, the Town Hall of Los Alcázares had already announced on Monday evening that all schools in the municipality would be closed on Tuesday, further disrupting a term of which well over a week was lost following the disastrous storm in September, and on Tuesday morning the local emergency services reported that a man had had to be rescued from his car.
An orange alert for possible heavy rain remains in force during the whole of the day in the Campo de Cartagena and around the Mar Menor, and with numerous roads already impassable due to flooding it goes without saying that members of the pubic are advised to avoid travelling in the area if at all possible.
