Lorca takes action to stop depopulation in rural areas of the municipality
The Lorca council is working hard to promote territorial balance in the province
From the Department of Rural Empowerment and Territorial Vertebration of Lorca, a motion is to be submitted to the next Ordinary Plenary Session for the implementation of the ‘Rural Guarantee Mechanism’. The aim of this is to generate a positive impact in the rural villages that have long suffered from depopulation in Murcia.
María del Carmen Menduiña, who is the Councillor for Rural Empowerment, stated "It is a clear objective of this Government team, the development and prosperity of the municipality, including our villages, and we will carry out all the actions that are in our power to make it so."
The council is set to bring forth two actions whose aims are to combat depopulation and achieve territorial balance in the municipality. The first action is to bring forth the 'Rural Guarantee Mechanism' in Lorca, with the aim of ensuring that all municipal policies generate a positive impact in the districts.
The councillor has stated that "the 'Rural Guarantee Mechanism' was created to place the rural population of Lorca at the centre of the creation of policies, legislation and programmes at all levels."
The Councillor continued by claiming that “In the Region of Murcia, we lack specific legislation on depopulation and rural development, and there is no 'Rural Guarantee Mechanism' at the regional level."
The second action is the activation of meetings of the Working Groups on the 10 axes of action included in the Strategic Plan for Vertebration and Demographic Promotion of the municipality of Lorca.
The Councillor stated in regards to this second action that "the cooperation between the different organisations and sectors of the population involved is decisive, and this cooperation must be structured not only at an institutional level, but also constitute a framework for public-private collaboration, always seeking to achieve the basic transversal objective of improving the quality of life in our districts."
