ARCHIVED - Lorca looks to become an Intelligent Tourist Destination in the Murcia Region
ARCHIVED ARTICLE The town has been granted 2.7 million euros to develop projects related to “sustainability, governance, tourism intelligence, security, technology and accessibility”
The town of
Lorca has expressed its interest in joining the burgeoning push towards creating Intelligent Tourist Destinations in the Region of Murcia to make holiday spots in the community more sustainable, accessible and technologically enabled.
That’s why the Deputy Mayor of Lorca and Councillor for Tourism, Francisco Morales, attended the constitution of the Bureau of Smart Tourist Destinations this week at the headquarters of the Institute of Tourism of the Region of Murcia.
Mr Morales said that “this body aims to be a meeting point between tourist municipalities, professional associations, universities and other strategic members to create an ecosystem that facilitates the development of a smart tourist destination model.”
The Councillor for Tourism further stated that “it is of special interest for the future of tourism in Lorca and the whole region to establish synergies between all the actors of the Intelligent Tourist Destinations for the implementation of collaborative projects in the areas of sustainability, governance, tourism intelligence, security, technology and accessibility.”
The regional destinations that have joined the National Network of Smart Tourist Destinations were represented at the Round Table, Lorca being one of the first to do so. Here, a mode of operation was agreed upon that will govern the scheme, for which an Executive Committee and a Plenary Committee that will have the president of Segittur (Spanish State Society dedicated to the Management of Innovation and Tourism Technologies) will be articulated.
Morales recalled the great commitment being made by Lorca City Council’s Department of Tourism in this area: “The strategy undertaken by the council has meant that Lorca has a development plan under the name ‘Lorca Connecting Heritage’ which was presented in an innovative way during the last edition of FITUR to achieve the goal of moving towards becoming an innovative tourist destination that is committed to digitisation, which guarantees the sustainable development of the tourist territory and promotes universal accessibility, facilitating the interaction and integration of visitors with the environment and increasing the quality of their experience in the destination and improving the quality of life of residents.”
Specifically, as a result of these discussions, Lorca has obtained 2.7 million euros, which will eventually become an investment of 3.3 million euros, within the Tourism Sustainability Plans in Destination from European funds for the implementation of a series of projects that will improve sustainability, governance, competitiveness of the destination and the digital transition in order to enhance Lorca as a tourist destination.
To conclude, the Deputy Mayor of Lorca remarked that “Lorca will continue to advance as a municipality of the future, complementing the tourist experience by making technology available to them.”
