ARCHIVED - Lorca employs drones to locate and kill mosquitos
The equipment allows experts to spray areas of Lorca that are inaccessible on foot
A combination of recent high temperatures and heavy rain across the Region of Murcia has created an ideal breeding environment for mosquitos, and Lorca City Council has employed a novel solution to the irritating problems: drones.
The advantage of using drone to combat mosquitos in that they are capable of locating populations of the insects in otherwise hard-to-reach areas.
The Councillor for Health of the Lorca City Council, José Ángel Ponce, confirmed that a company has been hired to carry out larvicide treatments and aerial inspections with drones on Tuesday May 3 and Wednesday May 4. They will focus on the Guadalentin river and surrounding areas and a product called 'Bacillus thuringiensis' will be used by the experts to eradicate the mosquitos, a compound that will cause no harm to the local flora and fauna.
“In addition to the direct actions, the drones will also inspect the area to detect possible breeding points for the insects,” the councillor explained, in an attempt to control the mosquito population in the town, since the recent “rains and inclement weather” can favour the hatching of larvae.
Mr Ángel Ponce also explained that the drones are an essential aspect of controlling the spread of mosquitos at this time of year, as they allow the experts to examine and treat areas that are impossible to access on foot, “since they can have a lot of vegetation or be flooded”.
