ARCHIVED - Livestock transport soars at the port of Cartagena
The number of animals shipped to and from Cartagena is 25 times higher than in 2010
Of the many developments at the port of Cartagena in recent years, the most publicized of which has been the campaign to generate cruise ship tourism, perhaps the most outstanding from the economic point of view has been the rise in the amount of livestock transported to and from the Costa Cálida by sea.
As recently as 2010 the number of head of livestock passing through the port was reported to be 22,500, but by 2018 the total had shot up to over 25 times that level, reaching precisely 577,767. Neither does the increase show any sign of reaching a ceiling, with the data for the first 9 months of 2019 showing a further 8 per cent increase.
In one sense, the transport of live animals is relatively insignificant in comparison with other goods, but it represents a conscious effort to diversify the range of services provided at the port, according to Pedro Pablo Hernández, the vice-president of the Port Authority. In addition, this is an important service for the cattle farming sector in Spain as it allows farmers and breeders to sell excess livestock and thus stabilize prices in the domestic market.
Of course, the shipping of live animals is governed by strict European Community rules and in response the port of Cartagena provides all possible guarantees regarding animal welfare and the treatment of organic waste. It was the first port in Spain to implement specific measures for this kind of traffic, while the ships used are also specially fitted to make them suitable for the purpose.
In order to continue adapting to the needs of the livestock sector the Port of Cartagena takes parts in events like the Sepor livestock farming fair on Lorca, which took place last week, promoting the typical export routes leading to Muslim countries around the Mediterranean such as the Lebanon, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya.
