ARCHIVED - Latest Mar Menor water quality measurements show stability
Turbidity and transparency have both improved considerably

The latest water quality measurements for the Mar Menor show that in spite of the high temperatures, the lagoon is remaining stable and although there are still undoubtedly some areas in which there are algal problems, in general the water quality remains safe for bathing:
Oxygen
The oxygen level fell 20% earlier in the spring, but has stabilized above 6 mg / l, with a general saturation of 100%, so is perfectly able to support marine life.
Salinity:
After the steep descent in salinity following the September Gota Fría, which radically altered the balance of the salinity due to the volume of rainwater (sweet water) which ran into the lagoon, the balance of salinity has been gradually improving and is now at 40.6 gr / l , which means that the water is almost equivalent to the Mediterranean in salinity (36-38 is the normal level for the Med). The normal level for the Mar Menor is 44, as the enclosed area of the Mar Menor is generally higher than the Med, heating up further and becoming more concentrated. At the moment the volume of sweet water which has flowed in during several episodes of heavy rain has diluted the water, threatening species which prefer the more densely salted waters of the Mar Menor.
Chlorophyll
This is currently around 2 µg / l - the risk of 'green soup' is from 10 - and the transparency level is almost 4 meters. Lower levels of chlorophyll give better transparency and the level at the moment is almost double that registered at the beginning of June, although far from levels measured prior to the algal issues currently being experienced. The transparency is affected by the higher than normal volumes of algal growth in the water
Restricting the flow of nutrients into the Mar Menor by reducing the level of agricultural activity and preventing the flow of water into the lagoon via the Rambla del Albujón will help the lagoon to recover a natural balance and remain stable and there are a considerable number of initiatives underway to try and resolve the issues long-term.
There have been no reports published since the 20th July relating to the quality of the specific beaches.
On 20th July the main problem areas were Playa Estrella de Mar and Los Urrutias, where sediment deposits continue to make bathing impossible and at that date the water was considered to be not suitable for bathing in those specific areas.
Elsewhere, bathing nets are down, the beaches are being well-maintained and occupancy is low.
Some bathers are reporting jellyfish outside of the netted areas, but as always, bathers wishing to avoid jellyfish should bathe inside the netted areas.
